On the 1st day, we visited 2 different farms.
First, we went to Green Circle, an organic farm. The owner of the farm talked to us about the concept of organic farming, as well as why she decided to have an organic farm and the problems that she faced on the farm. After that, we split up into 2 groups and toured around the farm. My group was led by the owner of the farm. I was awed by the size of the farm as I had had the impression that it was just a small farm. While we toured the farm, the owner of the farm told us more about the various types of plants that grew there. For some of the edible plants, we were given samples to eat without needing any washing! That's the beauty of an organic farm I guess.
At about 11.30, we left for Oh Chin Huat Hydroponics Farm. We were led by a man working at the farm. We saw the area where they prepared the macro- and micro-nutrients for the plants, the germination room as well as the greenhouses. In one of the greenhouses, the plants would be "held" above a running current of water mixed with nutrients. I was shocked when we found out that the
lavender plants that were grown even had the luxury of air-conditioning! How privileged the plants are! This was because lavenders plants can only grow in cool conditions, and normally is unable to grow in Singapore. It's just amazing how much technology has advanced! With proper technology, we can even grow plants that are normally unable to grow in our country! This will definitely help to make us much less dependent on other countries!
Overall, the farm visits were a relatively interesting experience, especially since the 2 farms were so different, what with the organic farm preferring to use simple farming methods and the hydroponics farm preferring to make use of advanced terchnology to farm.
